A Fresh Start to 2025 – Talks, Walks, and Artistic Wonders

I had been mulling over the idea of a lecture series for ages. Back in my post-uni days in London, I loved the vibrant lecture scene, so when RIBA Sussex offered their support, it felt like more than just an opportunity. A year on, it’s been fantastic to welcome architectural heavyweights like John McElgunn of RSHP, Chris Williamson of WW&P, Graham Morrison of Allies and Morrison, and Adam Richards of ARA to share their insights.

I am thrilled to announce that ‘A piECE of their mind’ is back for 2025! Kicking things off in February is the incredible Dr Cindy Walters of Walters & Cohen. Dr Walters’ journey is nothing short of inspiring. Born in Australia, she studied in South Africa before moving to London in 1990 to join Foster + Partners. By 1994, she co-founded Walters & Cohen with Michál Cohen. Her projects, like the Vajrasana Buddhist Retreat Centre (RIBA East Building of the Year 2017), Shirley Sherwood Gallery at Kew, and Newnham College, Cambridge, reflect her extraordinary talent and versatility.

Beyond her practice, Cindy’s impact extends to academia, professional institutions, and awards judging panels, including the Stirling Prize. She even chaired the Architecture Foundation (2019–2023) and is now a trustee. With her impressive CV, Cindy is sure to inspire us in the new year.

Walk Off the Christmas Pudding

After a festive season of lounging and overindulging, why not start January with some fresh air and a walk? Here are three fantastic spots to explore:

  1. Knepp Estate – A Rewilding Wonderland

Located near Horsham, West Sussex, the Knepp Estate offers 3,500 acres of rewilded magic. You’ll wander through wildflower meadows, scrubland, and ancient oaks, with storks and nightingales as your companions. For dogs, it’s an adventure playground; for us, it’s a chance to reconnect with nature.

  1. The Cockshut Project – Peaceful Restoration

Nestled in Lewes Brooks, this restored chalk stream and wetland area is a haven for wildlife and a tranquil spot to shake off festive excess. Dogs might treat it like a deluxe mud spa, but for you, it’s a serene escape into nature’s beauty.

  1. Flimwell Park – A Blend of Nature and Innovation

On the East Sussex-Kent border, Flimwell Park offers enchanting woodland trails alongside timber-framed workspaces and a cosy café. While the dog sniffs out sticks, you can soak up the park’s clever blend of sustainability and creativity.

Prefer Indoors? Try These Cultural Gems

On 18th January, Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft shines a light on Tadek Beutlich, the trailblazing textile artist and printmaker whose work redefines craft and art.

Whether you’re striding through the countryside or soaking up creative inspiration indoors, 2025 is off to an invigorating start!
