As we lurch headlong into the month of Brighton Pride, leisure and reflection, work and home life have never been busier for me so not much chance of a slowdown! All very well, however before the kids go back to school or University we need to make time to revel in the cultural and artistic delights our great City and the Sussex region has to offer.
What could be more ‘Brighton’ than a tour of the Brighton Pavilion – although this is one with a twist! This popular family event gives a behind-the-scenes look into life below stairs for Royal Pavilion servants with a tour of the basement and tunnels below this Brighton landmark.
Next up – let’s ‘Go West’ as the famous song goes, over to another Brighton & Hove landmark, Embassy Court. This guided tour is running across various dates until end of October and allows a glimpse into life in one of Sussex’s most revered Art Deco modernist gems.
Let’s journey further west along the coast to High Salvington Windmill on the edge of Worthing, where on 4th August you can have a stroll around the grounds, learn more about this beautiful working mill (which dates from the 1750’s) and enjoy delicious coffee and cake. As the mill is on the outskirts of Worthing you could also combine it with a family / dog walk into the South Downs too.
FAB Architects are running their regular summer school for budding architects, and is a great way to prepare school students for architectural education
It’s always summer in the whitewashed, clean lined, coastal Art Deco architecture of the De La Warr Pavilion, where those lovely people are carrying out guided tours until the end of August. The building underwent an £8M refurbishment designed by John McAslan & Partners about 20 years ago and transformed the semi-derelict building into a fantastic multi-purpose venue.
I’ve also got wind that the renowned cultural architects Haworth Tompkins have just got the gig to revamp and extend the building again with a £17M budget – very excited to see this one take shape. Great to see our cultural institutions get the attention they deserve.
Moving closer to the theme of ‘home’ is this exhibition showcasing the work of two photographers, looking at documenting the idea of home, exploring ideas centred around personal histories and memories of their home towns. Paul Kemp’s work explores the lived narratives of Worthing through a series of personal black and white photographs.
Finally, onto the very important topic of sustainable building design, Meshwork have created a unique community hub, to bring together anyone interested in low-energy and sustainable design, to create new networks for sharing information and tools. Retro-fit is very much the buzz word in our industry at the moment, so its great there are resources such as this for our CPD and general life-long learning.
As the Secretary of RIBA Sussex Branch, it would also be great to see you all sign up for the various events coming forward in September such as the upcoming RIBA Sussex Summer Social co-hosted with Women in Construction – Sussex, held at the Sussex Yacht Club in Shoreham-by-Sea.– more on that next month.
