In modern society, we face a critical challenge: humans spend 90% of their time indoors—more than prisoners in maximum-security facilities. The built environment has become our new habitat, yet design education often overlooks our biological needs. The result? We invest more thought into designing zoos for animals than homes for humans. Flat surfaces, unnatural colours, and a lack of natural visual stimulation dominate our spaces, leaving us sicker, sadder, and more stressed than ever.

Join Xander Cadisch, Phos and Vanessa Champion, The Journal of Biophilic Design as they discuss where the solution lies in reconnecting with our bodies and our past, and designing with nature in mind. This colourful presentation, inspired by a recently published book that has influenced government policy, university curricula, and international research, delves into our ancestral evolution, the power of surface, texture, light, and colour, while exploring the principles of Terrapin’s Patterns of Biophilic Design. Together, these insights can help us create spaces that enhance both emotional well-being and financial value—spaces where humans can thrive in their modern habitats
