A day-long event to visit and explore the history of the Stanmer estate on the outskirts of Brighton, which has somehow remained a mansion set in parkland for over 300 years. The development of this remarkable country house, park and estate will be discussed by Dr Sue Berry, during talks in the Henry Pelham Room at Stanmer House.
The programme for the day:
10:30. Tour of the outside and ground floor of Stanmer House
11:00. Talk: The rise of the Pelham family as politicians (Henry Pelham and Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle, were senior politicians to the benefit of the Stanmer branch) and the purchase and construction of the estate and revamping of Stanmer.
11:45. Coffee break
12:10. Talk: The development of the park and estate, funding and subsequent break-up that allowed the development of the northern suburbs of the city, the war-time presence of Canadians at the house and surrounding area, the post-war sale to Brighton and a hefty row over the future of the estates and park.

13:45. Walking tour of the village and church, including the restoration of the barn.
