In 1985, the Council of Europe established the European Heritage Days to raise awareness and appreciation of cultural heritage and the need for its care and protection. England joined the celebration with the launching of Heritage Open Days back in 1994.

Initially, this offered some 700 events nationwide; today this has grown more than 5,000 and it has become the nation's largest community heritage festival.

Over the last 30 years, Brighton & Hove Heritage Open Days has been coordinated by volunteers here at The Regency Town House and has grown into one of the largest in the country.
