The focus will be on 20th century architecture and will include consideration of why so little of that period has been listed compared with earlier periods.

The Regency Society in association with the University of Westminster presents a weekend of talks and tours to review post-Victorian architecture.

The events will consider developments in a century and a quarter of radical change. Innovations in construction techniques and building materials have greatly expanded the potential shape and appearance of our built environment. Fashions have changed from late Victorian and Arts & Crafts through art deco, modernism, ‘machines for living in’, system building and high-rise tower blocks to post-modernism, high tech and beyond.

During the weekend we will consider how importance and significance are recognised through listing, at both national and local levels—of which there is remarkably little in Brighton and Hove representing the 20th century. Is it too early to judge or is this a reflection on an unremarkable quality of building?
