Housing in the city is permanently under pressure: constraints on land between the sea and the Downs, imposed housing targets, continuing problems of homelessness, provision of one-and two-bedroom flats but no family homes to move on to. Average house prices in Brighton are almost 50 per cent higher than the national average—which means ‘affordable’ is too, yet developers fail to include affordable housing in their projects. Is there any way of changing to a more stable and balanced housing economy?
A panel will discuss the issues and invite comments and questions from the audience. Speakers will include Kelvin MacDonald, outgoing chair of BHT Sussex (formerly Brighton Housing Trust) and Cllr Jacob Taylor, deputy leader of Brighton & Hove City Council. Developers will also be represented. The session will be chaired by Professor Ivor Gaber.
